Is leadership exhausting?

Literally for as long as I can remember, I've heard leaders and managers say that "they love the job if it wasn't for the part of managing people".

This had always puzzled me because if it wasn't for the part of managing people, then what is it that they're doing? It is of course obvious that managing people is hard because apparently people come with emotions... and other people's emotions make us uncomfortable and we then have our own emotions that we don't like. So we blame it on other people and say that "managing them is hard".

Well, my confusion ended when I met a leader who was great with people, and when I asked him if he minded the part of managing people, he said "Not at all, I like the challenge". I was shocked for days after this because I had imagined that he would say that it's so hard and he is spending so much effort on it, which is why he's getting good results but the answer was NOT that!

I finally realized that this is what leaders are getting wrong about leadership:

They think that to become better leaders they need more networking events and HBR courses.

But the real way to become a better leader is -- address your own baggage.

Yes. To be better at 'managing people', YOU need to look at YOU. Not for more criticism and personal KPIs but with self-love, compassion and joy. You can be sure that the KPIs will follow.

When I coach leaders we get KPIs because we go deep and not just listen to the experts in fancy suits and brilliant, research based recommendations. Trust me, I've done all those courses and events and it got me nowhere.

Let me know if you or someone you know might benefit from coaching with me and we'll find out what's right for you. Because today, more than ever, we need powerful, inspiring and bold leaders - for healthcare and for the world.
