Physician Leadership

Physicians are leaders already but most of us don’t know that. We may ‘feel’ it to some extent, because of how people react to us or are influenced by us, but we don’t usually really believe that.

Then.. we find ourselves in the crossroads between patient dissatisfaction… staff complaining that it’s difficult to work with us… insurance companies telling us that we can’t treat our patients the way we know is right… and… administrators telling us that we need to see more patients.

Most of us are angry, tired, in disbelief, in identity crisis, pushing through… because there’s no other way. After all, this is what we studied and trained to become for the past 10 years or more. This is the most noble profession and still our dream. So why does it feel like a constant grind and continued sacrifice..?

Because we don’t have leadership skills.

For years I’ve been trying to figure out how to find this formula. I thought the answers were in books, articles, networking… etc. And all these resources have value, but what I found is that they are not the ultimate source of leadership success.

Leadership is fundamentally about people, and people are complicated, unclear, emotional, conflicting and contradictory.. The rules that apply to successful team management don’t always apply to the big picture runnning of a company or business and those two can often be at odds.

In addition - perhaps most importantly - you - the leader - also come with your own emotions, baggage, plans, ideas, dreams.. sometimes at odds with what other are looking for in you.
